Self Recording Studio (SAS)

The Self Recording Studio (SAS) is a fully automated studio where high quality video clips can be created.

The SAS (IA E2/160) offers the possibility to produce high quality recordings in form of explanation and learning videos. Since explanation and learning videos are particularly descriptive, complex or difficult teaching topics can be presented in a more understandable way. It is possible to record complete lectures. Presentations can be shown by using the PC in the studio or your own laptop.

New key issuance system - no more locking by personnel

For an even more autonomous and flexible handling of an SAS appointment and in order for the self recording studio to live up to its name, there is now a new key issuing system: The key box in building IA on level 0, directly next to the service center. Appointments and staff-related service times are now history.

From now on, we will provide you with a code for the key box in the booking confirmation for your appointment. After entering the code, the transponder will drop into the output tray (bottom) and can be returned after the SAS appointment by using the return tray (top left). The transponder will give you access to to 2nd floor and room 160, where the SAS is located.

Detailed instructions on the new locking procedure can be found here:

Equipment

Due to the fully automated technology, it is possible to perform the setup and execution of the recording on your own. With the help of a touch panel, as known from lecture halls, users are guided through a step-by-step setup. Afterwards, the recording can be started at the push of a button. No special technical knowledge is required. After recording, the videos can be transferred to a USB stick or uploaded to a cloud.

The SAS has all the technical equipment needed for recording:

  • A touch panel for setting up recording format and background selection
  • A permanently installed full HD camera whose image section can be changed via the touch panel and controlled via a screen on the wall
  • A fixed microphone on the ceiling
  • A height-adjustable desk for comfortable and low-barrier lecturing in standing or sitting position
  • A pen monitor (smart podium) on which presentations can be given
  • HDMI connection for the use of your own laptop

Since there is no daylight in the SAS, the professional lighting guarantees the same lighting conditions at any time of day. There are five background templates to choose from during setup. Due to the size of the studio, lighting and camera settings, the SAS delivers the best experience with only one person presenting. During a recording, a "Aufzeichnung läuft" ("Recording in Progress") sign lights up in the hallway. This ensures that the recording is not disturbed. The studio can be accessed by wheelchair and has a height-adjustable desk.

Recording Formats

Three different recording formats are offered in the SAS: Screencast, Vodcast and Picture in Picture (Side-by-Side). The following explanations can help to find the suitable format for your own recording.

Podcast recordings are unfortunately not feasible. For the production of professional audio recordings, we are happy to make our recording studio available to you. You can book an appointment via Media Production.

A screencast is the combination of the speech and a screen recording. Presentations or documents can be shown on the screen. It can also be written or drawn.

In a vodcast, the person giving the presentation is recorded in synchrony with his or her speech. In the video, the person stands in front of a pre-selected background.

This format creates two videos that are played side-by-side at the same time. One video is the camera image showing the person in front of the screen, and the other video is the screen recording. Thus, this format is a combination of a screencast and a vodcast. During playback, the size ratio of the videos can be adjusted according to your own preferences.

Important to Know
  • Do not wear any green clothing during the recording. These would otherwise be digitally removed together with the green screen and replaced by the pre-selected background.
  • If your own laptop does not have an HDMI output, please bring a suitable adapter.
  • If possible, bring a USB stick to copy the video file from the SAS PC to your USB stick after the recording is finished

FAQ

You can easily make a reservation for an appointment for recording in the SAS using the booking calendar. There you will find an overview of the already booked appointments. As soon as you hover with the mouse pointer over a day in the calendar, a button "Hinzufügen" ("Add") appears, over which you create a new date for the day. In the input mask you will be asked to enter a title and start and end time. It is not necessary to enter your name. Please note that double bookings cannot be considered. You can also make a check mark to indicate that you would like a technical briefing. After saving your entry, the appointment will be processed by the SAS team. You will then receive a confirmation email with a summary of all necessary information, the code for the key box, and links to helpful instructions.

The SAS is located on campus in building IA on floor 2 in room 160. A map of the location you can find here. Please note that the doors on the floor are alarmed and you can only enter the studio with an authorized transponder. We will send you the key code with which you can pick up the transponder at the key box after a successful appointment booking.

You will receive a key code in the confirmation mail of your appointment booking, with which you can pick up a transponder assigned to you at the key box (IA 0/150-154). This transponder will give you access to floor 2 and the SAS room (160). For more information, please read the instructions "Access to the SAS via key box".

Due to the fully automated technology, it is possible to perform the setup and execution of the recording alone. With the help of a touch panel, as known from lecture halls, users are guided through a step-by-step setup. Afterwards, the recording can be started at the push of a button. No special technical knowledge is required. If desired, the IT.SERVICES team will support your first recordings with a short technical briefing.

Detailed instructions on how to use the SAS can be found here (DE) and a short manual, which is also laid out in the studio, can be found here (DE).

Basically, everything that is shown on the screen is recorded. This can be photos, videos, documents and presentations. You can also write or draw in a program suitable for this purpose. All Microsoft Office programs, Adobe Acrobat Reader, as well as the "SMART Notebook" software for writing and sketching with the pen are installed on the PC in the SAS.

To show content such as a PowerPoint presentation, drawings, or photos and videos from an external device, the device only needs to have an HDMI port. If your device does not have an HDMI port (e.g. MacBook, iPad, some tablets, older laptops), please bring a suitable adapter. If content from the Internet is to be shown, the room also has a HIRN port connection where you can login via https://login.rub.de. HDMI and LAN cables are available in the studio.

In the SAS, short teaching videos of 5 - 10 minutes up to entire lectures of 1.5 hours can be recorded. For the recording of the complete lecture series of a semester, the RUBcast service of automatic recordings in the lecture hall is also available.

You will be requested to save the video file via the touch panel after the recording is finished. If you have brought a USB stick, you can copy the file from the SAS-PC to your USB stick. Alternatively, you can upload the file from the SAS-PC to a cloud server.

If you want to publish the video in a Moodle course or on a website, it is a good idea to upload the file to the video management system Opencast. There you can use the video editor to cut out individual sequences, such as slips of the tongue or unwanted long pauses, and publish the recording in a Moodle course or on a website in the same step. The RUBcast team is available to help you with implementation and questions regarding Opencast.

However, you can also edit the video using a video editing software of your choice. Open source programs such as ShortCut and Handbreak can be used to edit and convert videos, respectively. The ZfW will be happy to advise you on e-learning tools.
